Thanks for writing in. You raise an interesting point -- one with important implications for Pennsylvania. In our work, we have tried to focus on the issues of ensuring qualifications, removing money from the process of selecting judges and creating a system that opens up more pathways to the bench for qualified lawyers of all races, ethnicities, and genders from all over Pennsylvania. We have sought to leave the more political issues to the politicians, but Delaware is a model that should certainly be looked at as you rightly note that political balance on the courts is often raised as an important issue.

I greatly support PMC's longstanding efforts to bring merit selection to Pennsylvania. However, I am left with a lingering questions about the plan currently before the PA General Assembly: why is there no requirement that the courts be politically balanced? On that point, I think the model that the State of Delaware currently employs exceeds the plan currently being debated in PA. Given the quality of the judiciary in Delaware, I think they are doing things right down there.
